This sculpture stands tall and grounded, built from natural cottonwood that twist upward from its base. The vertical elements curve and lean into one another, actually touching at points that give the piece structural stability. This creates a quiet sense of support and tension.
The piece is finished in a natural non yellowing polyurethane so the material feels honest and alive. Its cracks and crevices are not filled purposely in order to show the natural weathering of the wood, as a contrast to the other parts that are finely finished.
There is a subtle suggestion of figures. The forms read like bodies in close proximity, maybe in conversation, maybe protecting one another. At the same time, it avoids becoming literal. It stays abstract enough to let the viewer decide.
The negative spaces are just as important as the wood itself. Openings between the forms create rhythm and lightness, preventing the piece from feeling heavy. Overall, it feels steady but not rigid. Rooted yet reaching. Calm, but quietly powerful.
