This sculpture is meant to be a powerful, thought-provoking work that transforms a traditional wooden chair into a visual metaphor for political or ideological division. The chair is split down nearly the middle, creating two distinct yet connected halves. This split is not only structural but also symbolic. It serves as a visual commentary on the state of American unity. It portrays a nation divided along political lines, yet still trying to hold itself together. The sculpture captures the tension between dualism and unity, stability and fragility, identity and ideology.

It’s minimal, yet deeply expressive—communicating a complex national narrative through a single, broken object. The two halves of the chair are lined with bold red (right side) and blue (left side) accents—universally recognized as representing the two major political parties (Republican and Democrat, respectively). These colors immediately suggest political polarization.

The chair has been cut with precision, showing a perfect divide through the seat, backrest, and leg supports. Despite the division, the two sides remain connected by a small black hinge at the center—perhaps representing the fragile tie that still holds the nation together.

Chairs are often seen as symbols of authority, rest, or belonging. By splitting the chair, the artist disrupts its function and stability—just as political division can disrupt a nation’s coherence.
