This 10-foot-high wood sculpture was made during the artists residency in June, 2026, at the Buffalo Creek Art Center, in Gardnerville, NV. This abstract vertical form composed of flowing, organic cutouts with black finish, reveals subtle wood grain and warm undertones, giving the surface depth and texture. The piece is shaped like an elongated vessel or figure, with sinuous, ribbon-like columns rising from a compact base and joining near the top in a rounded, open loop.
The negative spaces are central to the work: long, irregular openings run through the sculpture, creating a sense of movement, lightness, and transparency despite its height and material weight. The wavy contours suggest natural forms—water, vines, flames, or the human body—while the carved edges give it a hand-worked, tactile presence.
The Douglas Fir was burned in the Japanese style of wood preservation developed in the 18th century. In order to continue to protect the sculpture a wood preservative (Total Wood Preservative) was then applied in a Black Walnut color.
