Standing Watch

Dimensions:60H x 31W x 12D
Edition Number:344

This sculpture reads as a quiet, upright presence.  The piece is made of Parota wood, and sits on a base made of the same species.  The heartwood and sap wood contrast through the piece, and even onto the base.

The surfaces are smooth but organic, following the natural grain and subtle curves of the material. Two asymmetrical branches extend upward and outward like arms or growths, giving the piece a gesture that feels protective and slightly reverent rather than expressive or dramatic.

Embedded near the top is a small, dark metal structure—precise, geometric, and cage-like. Its linear clarity contrasts sharply with the organic wood, suggesting restraint, containment, or guardianship. The metal element feels intentional and symbolic, as if it is holding, framing, or protecting something unseen within the wooden form.

Overall, the sculpture balances opposites: natural and constructed, softness and rigidity, growth and control. It evokes a standing figure without fully becoming one, allowing the viewer to read it as a sentinel, a vessel, or a protected inner core. The mood is contemplative and restrained—quietly powerful rather than overtly monumental.
