Witness

As with most of my work, I was driven to create this work from a fallen Palm Petiole, the stalk connecting the leaf base to the main part of the frond. I was taken by the incredible shape and solidity of the piece. I was able to finish the piece using the same procedures that I use in other woods.

This sculpture has the quiet presence of a figure standing in stillness, observing without judgment. The smooth vertical rise and subtle asymmetry suggest a body shaped by time, while the single black sphere reads like an eye, a memory, or a point of awareness. The contrast between warm wood and the dark orb creates a sense of focus and introspection.
